Team Jacksonville Takes The Cup
(October 9, 2007) PALM HARBOR, FLA. - The west coast is no longer home for the Team Championship Cup (formerly the Sir Elford Cup).
At least for a year or so.
The gutty team from Jacksonville, Fla. lead the tournament from wire to wire to take the top prize in the 2007 GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour Team Championship at the Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Fla.
Team Jacksonville bested 39 other teams from across the nation and Puerto Rico and ultimately only needed a margin of 18 points to edge out the team from South Florida. Third place in the event went to Team Chicago, with the two-time defending champion San Diego taking fourth. Their first time competing in the event, the team from Texas/Oklahoma took a very respectable fifth place finish.
One of the oldest events on Tour, the Team Championship pits a field of 12-person teams from local Tours across the country in a Ryder Cup-style format. The teams, comprised of two members from each of the six flights, compete over 45 holes in three different formats: team best ball, modified alternate shot and individual match play.

The 2007 Team Champions from Jacksonville are: (standing, L to R) Michael Wood, David Davis, Murray Miller, Phil Ackley, Robert Inman, Brian Davidson and Sean Steele. (kneeling, L to R) Jay Merrillees, Michael Wood Jr., Alfredo Garza, Doug Ekern, Jonathan Bolen and Danny Whitener. Duke Denson (not pictured).
